Kids Know Stuff - Like When To Dress For Bubonic Plague

The kid's costume this year was medieval plague doctor

The 10-year-old chose to be a plague doctor for Halloween. This was both spooky, cool, and timely, as a teenager came down with the plague in Eastern Oregon. Flea bites are still the main avenues of transmission.

Here is how a medieval artist rendered the real thing:


I freaked myself out thinking that I, too, would get the plague and everyone in my family would have to wear the above get-up to be around me. Luckily I live in an age of antibiotics and plague is not usually fatal.

Still, if you live in these areas you might want to keep a black bird mask handy.
