The Bots Are In Control

The above is from a comment I received yesterday on a post called "Kids Know Stuff -Like When To Dress For Bubonic Plague."

Hard to believe the comment was written by a human.

I've been receiving more and more of such things. I never thought about having a ceremony to present kids with money.

Looking forward to the day when the robots will be giving really excellent parenting advice.

Smartassery Can Come Back And Bite You In The ...Ass

When the kids were really little (4-7) we all enjoyed pirate culture and sea chanties.

Later, when the pirate phase had ended, I continued to offer to sing them sea chanties. When a kid took me up on the offer, I would do my best at a cockney accent and let loose. I would also play a few favorites for them on the stereo when given the chance. Such as:

Drunken Sailer
Bound for South Australia

Now the son comes back at me: "Dad, what do you do with a drunken sailor?"

Me: "Send him to South Australia?"

Son: "The first step is to attempt to recognize the signs of addiction and learn if the sailor or his support network is open to the idea of rehab. Then comes researching treatment options, which should include discussing logistical considerations with a trained drunken sailor counselor. Only then should you plan an intervention, which shouldn’t include singing any songs glorifying alcohol abuse."

Tech Problem Some Kind Of Metaphor

A guy goes to bed, everything is fine, all tech working as it should -- email coming in, all settings in their correct places.

In the morning, in the clear light of day, I too often see that all hell has broken loose, or the phone has stopped accessing Yahoo mail.

I didn't touch anything. The world just kept moving as I slept. Now there's a fresh problem to solve.

I know I like to complain. Today was a good day and I'm lucky to have the problems I do.

New Toaster -- Again!

The most-used piece of kitchen machinery is our toaster oven, by far. The ubiquitous cheese toast continues to be the basic unit of food consumed in our household.

Bagels are also toasted non-stop.

This was the first kitchen appliance that the kids used by themselves.

To say we use the toaster oven hard is an understatement.

What I have learned is that the planned obsolescence of all toaster ovens is 3 years. I have purchased inexpensive units, as well as the more expensive, and they all last about three years. And they also work about the same.

Now that I'm happily ensconced in middle-age and ridiculous, I buy the toaster oven with a digital display and many settings -- all just to melt the cheese on the bread. I like the styling and button that automatically will add time to the toasting if the bread is frozen.

When the toaster oven ceased toasting the other day, I dropped everything and just bought a replacement unit. The only redeeming factor is that I'm aware of how poor I am about being a discerning consumer.

Ski Day

Crazy windy, blowing snow, sun breaks, whiteout -- an awesome day up on the mountain.

Kid Doing Fun Stuff With 3-D Printer

The kid created the file with an online editor, then brought it to school and printed it.

I'm impressed with the object, as well as the free tools to create it. Another illustration that the world of spare parts and objects will soon be radically changed.

My M&M Hierarchy For The Record

Academics and serious amateurs will, of course, note the variety of M&Ms in the above dish.

But which M&Ms are most premium in the eyes of Portdaddia?

I will state for the record how these things go:

  1. Peanut
  2. Peanut Butter
  3. Crispy
  4. Dark Chocolate
  5. Pretzel
  6. Milk Chocolate
  7. Mint

Haven’t tried yet:
  • Mega Peanut
  • Birthday Cake – get serious!
  • Milk Chocolate Snack Mix
  • Peanut Snack Mix
  • Mega Milk Chocolate
  • Almond
