The Elk Statute and fountain was one of those features of Portland that one passed by countless times over the years and took no notice. A bronze sculpture realistically depicting an elk. A vague tribute to someone (David P. Thompson), referencing the outdoor environment, the undiminished spirit of wild animals, our longing for a lost God, whatever.

A new, angrier elk statue has now appeared in place of the old one. Where before what the elk represented was unknown, this one is clearly dedicated to social justice.

Because the monument is close to the federal courthouse, it
became a rallying point for Black Lives Matter protests. The fountain troughs became
the site for several protest fires which severely damaged the structure. The
statute was removed and put into storage.
