I’m really happy the kid is liking the Dead Kennedys. Whatever this type of music meant to me when I was young back in the Regan years, it’s clear that the songs now speak to a new generation with themes of non-conformity and opposing mainstream culture.
I tell the kid that in the song, "California Über Alles," the
band is afraid of Governor Jerry Brown exerting fascism over California and then
the United States. For a band looking for a dystopian image, they posit
something that looks sweet and comforting when compared to our current political
landscape.
